Christmas... The Nativity!

For the month of December, I've been studying in the New Testament.  I actually started in Luke and am in John, so I'll need to go back to Matthew and Mark.  As our Christmas devotional was coming and Mom and I were able to go to the Tabernacle Choir Christmas Concert yesterday morning (it was a busy day!), I've been thinking about Christ's birth, and the circumstances and other people at His birth.  I'm really lucky to have the score to "Savior of the World", so I've been able to play and sing through those songs.

1.  Mary.  I can't even begin to imagine how Mary felt with all of that.  When she says, "Behold the handmaid of the Lord, be it unto me according to thy word."-Luke 1:38  I am so amazed by her faith.  If I had just an 1/8 of that faith I would be a much better a person.  I tend to question everything, like I know I've received this answer, but I still don't see how it's going to play out, and I question it.  I've learned that I want to be more like Mary!

2.  The inn.  There Mary is about to have a baby, and Joseph is doing all he can to get her somewhere safe and clean, but there is no room in the inn or any other inn.  John Rhys-Davies was reading Luke 2 at the Tabernacle Choir concert yesterday, and as he read the part about having no room in the inn, I pondered if I ever have felt like there's no room here.  Have I ever been so sucked in on something, whether it be the busyness of life, whether this or that is going to happen, technology, etc. that I haven't let there be room in my heart for Jesus?  A few things came to mind of things I need to be better at.  How often do we not have room?  Just a thought...

3.  The shepherds. The shepherds were out there watching their flocks, for their whole lives they'd been told of the prophesies of Christ's coming to save the world.  Could you even imagine what they felt when they saw that new star shining so brightly in the sky?  Here was the sign they had been waiting for for forever!  We're so lucky to have the scriptures that we can read the prophecies, read of His life, death and resurrection, and all of the revelations since.

4.  The star.  The star was the sign of His coming.  It was so bright, welcoming and announcing the birth of this baby that was going to be the "Light of the World".  I often think of the light that we share with each other.  Some people have this bright glow about them, sometimes the light dims, but we are all blessed with this light, and we get to share it with others.

5.  The baby.   Born in a manger in a stable in Bethlehem.  I'm so grateful for that baby!  I'm grateful that because of Him, and his atoning sacrifice that we can all be saved!  Families are forever!  He atoned for our sins, our hardships, our sadness, our happiness, our joy.  I am forever grateful and will always strive to do what He would have me do!

Watch this!

Bountiful Regional Center...

Today I went to the Bountiful Regional Center to un-decorate after last night's devotional (Thanks, Donna for your help!).  For just a few moments I was in the auditorium by myself vacuuming the stage of fake pine needles.  It was literally like three minutes or so, but in that short time my mind was able to go over the last three years of Christmas devotionals.

The first year, I was so thrilled to be able to be a part of it!  I was anxious to help, to decorate, to sing, to do whatever I could to help someone out.  It was exciting and new!  I remembered volunteering to decorate the stage, and then being so scared I couldn't really pull it off.  Many people donated things for me to use, and I had a great schedule back then, so I was able to hand make all of these ornaments.  I spent hours, and it all ended up being wonderful!  Things were fun and exciting, and I loved it!

The second year I took on a different role in the Christmas devotional.  I still got to decorate, and added a few things to the decorations, and it looked lovely.  That year I was part of the leadership, and there was a lot of tension in the build up, and it was way more tiring!  I enjoyed the actual devotional, but the tension outweighed the beauty of the night.

This year, I totally was not looking forward to it!  My newer role had me heading this event, there were three of us that had worked on it in the past, and one got married in November, so that left the two of us.  Anyways, there has been some amazing tension, but the evening went wonderfully!

Okay, so here's where I'm going with this.  In these three years, I've let the stress associated with this event and the work up to it, make me not be too thrilled to be putting this production on at this building. I'm sure I would've felt the same about any other building, too.  As I was vacuuming the stage, with just the hum of the vacuum, I was able to feel the Spirit so strongly!  I knew that I was cleaning the stage of a dedicated house of the Lord.  I was cleaning it for Him.  There was this peace that I felt so strongly!  I was able to ponder all of the amazing experiences I've had there, and the amazingly wonderful people that I've been able to get to know through those events. I was able to feel His love for me.  It was a humbling three minutes with many millions of thoughts about how grateful  I am for the opportunities I've been given and for the amazing friends I've been able to work with.  Thanks everyone for your help on these devotionals!

What you may or may not know about me :)

On Facebook, they've been doing that "give you a number" thing, and then you post that amount of things about yourself that people may or may not know.  I don't usually jump on the band wagon with all of those things, like the breast cancer awareness... going here for how long, etc.  I figured I could share some things on here if anyone was interested...

1.  I used to fish with my dad, and loved it!  Every once in a while we go to a fish farm now, but that's not the same...  I still don't have to ever touch the fish, though!

2.  I only made it through one girls camp, while I was in young women.  Every time I ended up having some kind of strange disease that landed me in the ER or broke my leg on a night hike, etc..  Once I missed it, because I went to Disneyland.

3.  I broke my leg in the chapel at church falling down the stairs.  No one got up to help me, and the deacons all laughed.  I hobbled all the way outside before crying.  I was 20.  Haha!  So embarrassing!

4.  I'm an introvert.  Probably not a surprise to my family, but probably is to my friends.  I'd rather play with the kids then do anything else at family parties, because we can just play, and I don't have to talk to the adults, not that I don't love them, I just feel like, why/what would they want to hear about me.  When I first started having to be in front of large crowds, I'd have to go off by myself, pray and then put my "I'm in front of people" hat on.

5.  I totally hide behind my responsibilities so I don't have to be in uncomfortable situations.

6.  A guy I dated for a while, last year, biggest complaint, that he stated to me, was that I didn't communicate very well.  I don't think I ever called him more than twice.  I decided I would work hard to be better at that in the future, when that was all done.  I'm still not good at it.  Maybe one day.  Sometimes I'm too cautious about what I'm saying, and I just beat around the bush, which never works.  Then other times I come straight out and say it, which hasn't worked, either.

7.  I know tons of people!  I know their stories, I know their hardships and their joys.  I'm grateful that I get to know it, and support them.  Only a tiny amount of people know me like that.  I don't know if I'm scared to let people in, because they'll leave, or if I just don't like talking about myself.

8.  I say that I love to travel.  I do love seeing new places, and enjoying the beauties there.  I don't like huge crowds.  When we were at Disneyland last week, Akston kept throwing himself on the ground (he's almost 2), and I was nearly having panic attacks knowing he was going to be trampled.

9.  My most favorite place ever is American Fork Canyon!  Other favorites include Snowbird and Eden/Huntsville area... I'm a home body.

10.  My piano is my greatest outlet!  When I'm happy, when I'm sad, when I'm hurt or when I'm thrilled, when I want to share my feelings without saying them, I can play them!

11.  I know the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is true!  I don't know where I would be without this knowledge.  I love reading the scriptures and the words of the prophets.  I need to be constantly reading and studying in order for me to feel peace through all of the worries, concerns, fears that I often have.

I know that Heavenly Father watches out for each of us, and knows each of us individually.

Last week we had stake conference at church.  Mom and I were anxious about this one, because we knew that that would be the end of our serving in the stake young women's presidency.  Mom had reached her 5 year mark of serving in that position, and I had been in for almost 4 years. We had known this was coming, since June, which made each activity more bittersweet.

We had a visiting member of the Seventy presiding for our stake conference.  I had a MidSingles activity on Saturday night, so I didn't attend the Saturday night meeting or I would've known what I'm about to share a day earlier.

We had a "morning-side", like a devotional, but we had it at 8:00 a.m. with our youth and their leaders.  We got there a couple minutes before it started, so we sat on the second row and near the center.  The meeting was going, it was a nice meeting, and then the member of the Seventy started talking.  He had this cute Spanish accent, and he was talking about growing up in Argentina.  As I was listening to him, I thought that my cute dad would've loved to have been there.  He served his mission in Argentina...

---Once upon a time Sandy Nicholes was shopping at Harmon's in Sandy, and overheard a young woman speaking Spanish, Argentine-Spanish.  He followed her voice, and introduced himself to her.  After talking for a short time, he invited her and her family to dinner at our house the next night.  My poor mom, being the only one not able to speak Spanish, besides us little ones, made dinner and passed it to everyone without being able to communicate with them.

Our families hit it off right away!  The girl at Harmon's name was Christina, she was married to a man named Rudy.  Christina's mom, Maria, took care of Cristina's kids, and when I was 4 and Collin was 2, she babysat us for a while.  (I have no memory of how long, but I don't think it was very long, because once I started kindergarten, we were babysat at Grandma Mamie's .)

Maria's husband, Hugo, owned Precision Time clock store. We moved to Layton, and Daddy died.  We'd occasionally see them at their stores when we were downtown or at Fashion Place, but we didn't have much to do with each other after that.  We saw them around Collin's mission farewell.  They gave him a beautiful watch.  Sometime in 2007 was the last time we saw Maria, right after her cute Hugo had passed away.---

So, back to Sunday...  I leaned over to Mom, and said, "That guy reminds me of Rudy."  His name was Elder Rudolfo Franko.  Rudy/Rudolfo, I didn't put it together until the end. We were heading out, in between meetings to clean out the stake yw closet, and when I stood up, I looked down the row, and there was this woman, that although older, had eyes that I would never forget!  It was Christina!  I walked over to her, and Cyd was going to introduce me to her, and I cut her off (not even thinking), and said, "You're Christina.  Maria babysat me!"  What an amazing experience!  We talked for a long time!  I got to hear all about their family, and how everyone is.  We talked about my dad.  It was so sweet!  Rudy... Elder Franko was up talking to some of the leaders, but then he came down, and Christina told him who I was.  He turned to our stake president and told him what a great guy my dad was.  He then told me that Dad has been a part of their family.  They talk about him, and have wanted to be like him, because of his kindness and love for everyone.

Some sad news was that this sweet Maria passed away last Christmas.  I wish that we would have known.  She was an amazing, beautiful woman that was so kind and generous!   Whenever I hear Peter Cetera on the radio, my heart jumps back to being in her living room listening to it with her, as she watched us, and taught us about her Argentine culture.  We were so blessed to know her!

I'm so thankful that Heavenly Father gives me little tender mercies, when I need them!

"Anchored in Hope"

October has always been a crappy month for me, other than General Conference and our family tradition of celebrating my daddy's birthday at the Grand America for Sunday Brunch.  We do it one time a year, because he liked to do it.  Although, mom and dad would go at Snowbird during our week in August, it has worked out for us closer to his birthday.  So, think of my feelings when my most recent mid-singles conference was coming right around the corner, and I planned it for October. However, I've decided that this was probably the best October I've had in a super, long time!

My conference was called "Anchored in Hope" from Ether 12:4, of the Book of Mormon, "Wherefore, whoso believeth in God might with surety hope for a better world, yea, even a place at the right hand of God, which hope cometh of faith, maketh an anchor to the souls of men, which would make them sure and steadfast, always abounding in good works, being led to glorify God."

I love this verse!  I love all of the action words.  We have to move forward to have things work out for us.  This time I got to present.

I taught "Hope On: Steps in Your Journey."  I shared seven steps that have helped me have hope and happiness in this destination of life.  So often we get caught up in the "...I'll be happy when I... get a new job... get married... etc...," we need to be happy on our way to those things.

Here are my 7 steps:

-Be prayerful and have faith!
-Read your scriptures
-Attend the Temple
-Be creative!
-Be active!
-Serve willingly
-Be happy!

(Yes, the first step is actually two, but they go so well together!)

Be prayerful and have faith!

In the New Testament when the father brings his son that has epilepsy, or something like that, to Jesus Christ and says, "If thou canst do anything, have compassion on us, and help us." The Savior's response is, "If thou canst believe."

Sometimes it's hard to believe.  We have doubts and distractions that make it difficult.  I call these moments of doubts "Sariah moments," after reading 1 Nephi 5 of the Book of Mormon. She was the wife of a prophet, and she had her doubts.  I'm an everyday, normal girl, and I too struggle at times with doubts.

In Pres. Dieter F. Uchtdorf's talk, "The Infinite Power of Hope," he spoke of his mother.  They were fleeing to Germany during World War II for safety, and they were fleeing by train.  One night the train stopped for supplies, and his mother got off the train to find food for her children.  When she returned to the location of the train, it was gone, along with her children.  He said, "I know with certainty: her faith overcame her fear, and her hope overcame her despair. She was not a woman who would sit and bemoan tragedy. She moved. She put her faith and hope into action."  I love that!  I hope that someday someone will be able to say that about me, that I didn't sit and wait, that I was actively moving forward!

Receive your patriarchal blessing, and read it frequently!

Read your scriptures

I know that even reading a few verses a day, will bring the Spirit into your day!  The more you have the Spirit, the happier you will be.  Pres. Boyd K. Packer said in the last General Conference that it really doesn't matter what book of scripture, just read them!

You can also receive many answers as you read them.  One favorite scripture of mine, that answered my prayers, is Mormon 8:22:  "For the eternal purposes of the Lord shall roll on, until all his promises shall be fulfilled."  That includes promises to me!

Attend the Temple

Temples are such beautiful places, where you can gain a greater perspective of things going on in your life!  It's amazing!

Be creative!

Find something you love, and do it!  I love to create!  Watch this great video!

Be active!

Find things you love to do, and people you love to spend time with and do it!  I find that in my life, I get tied down to the things going on, and I get so caught up in it, that I feel the need to escape!  I escape to a soccer game or to my nephews and niece to play with them or outside and take pictures.  Rio Tinto Stadium watching Real Salt Lake play is one of my most favorite places to be!  I think in this step, it's anything that you can relax and let go of your concerns.

Serve willingly

This one is something that I've thought a lot about!  Freely giving of yourself without expectations of what you're going to get out of it is one of the greatest gifts you can give to someone.  Do it!  There are always opportunities to serve, even something as small as smiling at someone, could be a great service!

Be Happy!

This one sounds easy, but sometimes it isn't.  One lesson I have learned is that when I'm not happy, if I pretend I am, eventually I am.  It's a mind trick that I play on myself, and at the end of the day, I look back and realize that I truly am happy.  It doesn't always last, sometimes you have to start over day after day after day, and that is totally fine!

We have so much to be grateful for!  Look for the beauty that surrounds us!  If you're still reading at this point, thanks for letting me share my thoughts!  The beauty of this life is that everyday is a new beginning, and we can start all over again!  I'm grateful for that!  I'm grateful for the Savior, and his atoning sacrifice!  Hope on!

Eye Dr. Drama!

I've been having some sight problems, and my contact prescription expired in the middle of August.  I had a couple of contacts remaining, so I didn't go to the doctor until August 27th.  At some point, I went to America's Best, back in the day, and bought the club thing, so I had free appointments.  Mistake?  Probably, but I paid to be in the club thing, so I didn't want to waste what I paid.  Anyways, that appointment is where this conversation took place:

Dr.: I see you changed the brand of contacts you use. Why?
Me: My eyes couldn't breathe in those.
Dr.: That is not true. They are made of the most breathable material.
Me: Well, my eyes turning bright red, the contacts being stuck to my eye, and the cloudiness on the lens seemed to me that the only explanation was that my eyes couldn't breathe.
Dr.: Well, you are wrong. But if you're needing to go old school so be it!

Do you see anything wrong here?  It got worse.  "Is 1 better or 2 better?", I responded with "they are the same." "Well, that's not possible!"  It may not be possible, but either way I couldn't read it.  One of my friends told me I should've asked if he wanted to flip the coin or if I could.  My prescription hardly changed, but he said I had developed an astigmatism since the last time.  He said to wear my new glasses, when I got them for a few days, without wearing contacts to get used to them.

So, my glasses came on Friday.  I wore them, and could see some things better, but my eyes burned really bad, and my head hurt.  My eyes felt extremely tired after a couple of hours, and everything was really blurry.  I told myself to keep trying, because he did say it would take some time to adjust.  On Sunday, I went to my brother's ward to listen to his family speak in Sacrament meeting.  I couldn't see their faces, and I couldn't even see numbers on the hymn thing.  Yesterday, still wearing my glasses, having a migraine, I was trying to work on the computer, and couldn't see any words.  After a lot of ibuprofen and a couple hours of keeping my eyes closed, I put my contacts in, and could see totally fine, and my migraine subsided.

I took my glasses back today, and said the contact prescription was perfect, but I couldn't see through my glasses.  The lady checked them, and they were correct to what had been written, and then she checked the computer, to make sure things were put in correctly.  They were.  So, she talked to the doctor, and he told her that I needed to wear them for a week straight, and then I'll be able to see.  I told her that was not possible, because I couldn't work, drive, teach piano, or do any computer work.

So, twenty minutes later, she came back to tell me that the doctor wanted to see me.  I waited 15 minutes to see the aide, and she ran a test- that one where they scan your eye, and the machine guesses what your prescription is.  I then waited another 10 minutes before he saw me.  (I got a lot of reading done!)  He looked at me, and said, "Weren't you just here?" like he had no idea I was there, after she'd just talked to him.  I explained the situation, and he was thrilled that I liked my new contacts better than my old contacts.  I had to say that there was no difference in the wear of the contacts, I just liked being able to see better.  He said that I should notice a huge difference in the breathability of my contacts.  That was never the problem with my Acuvues, which we had discussed, as mentioned above already.

So, he looks at the test, and the test is considerably different from the one they did a week and a half ago.  "There is NO explanation for this!"  Well, either the machine is wrong or there is something wrong with my eyes!  Looks like there are TWO explanations.  So, he did the test of "which is better- 1 or 2? higher or lower?"  It all ended up being the same.  So, he wanted to send me on my way, and only where my glasses.  I told him it was unsafe to drive in them, so he had me see which line I could read wearing them.  Squinting, he said I was in the legal limit to drive.  I was SQUINTING!  Yes, I did tell him, "well, with me squinting, it looks like..."

You know that part in You've Got Mail where Meg Ryan says she wishes she could come up with a real zinger, but can't.  That's me-- most of the time.  Instead of being able to come up with something, to tell someone exactly how I feel, I bawl.  Yep, you guessed what came next.  I cried.  He looked at me, and said, "well, what would you like me to do?!"  I told him I'd like to be able to see, so I could function like a normal human being, and he told me that it wasn't that I couldn't see, it was that I wasn't used to wearing glasses.  In 2007, I didn't even own a pair of glasses, so I need to take time to get used to them.... Yep, he told me that!  2007!  -Well, for anyone who knows me, I wear glasses every day at work, and I'm often wearing them, when I'm not at work.  He told me I needed to regularly be wearing glasses 14 hours a week.  I average about 28 hours a week, most the time more.-  In my bawling, I informed him I needed to return those glasses, and see someone who would really help, and take care of the situation.  After which, he decided he'd take away the astigmatism numbers on the lenses, and we can try my glasses without that, and see if that makes it better.  Once again, telling me I needed to wear the new ones, when they're done, for an entire week with no contacts before he'll see me again.

So, alas, this stupid drama is still not over!  Don't go to America's Best, at least not the Riverdale one!

This last week Brigham Bradley, who graduated in my graduating class at Northridge, drowned.  I don't think I ever knew Brigham, but reading the posts by so many people from school about him, it sounded like he was a fantastic guy.  Then one of my friends grandpa passed away last weekend.  These two events got me thinking.

One girl blogged about Brigham, and quoted what one of her friends said:

"I hate that things happen, big life-changing things and the sun keeps coming up and the rest of the world doesn't seem to notice and you are left thinking 'You don't understand!  You can't just go to a movie or go to the store!  This amazing person isn't here anymore and you didn't even know them!"

Those thoughts are so familiar to me, but I've never put them into words.  I remember the day that Grandpa Ross passed away, Collin said he didn't want to fall asleep, because as long as he was awake he was in the same day that Grandpa was.

I remember once being at Grandma Mamie's house months after she had passed away, and the clock in her kitchen was ticking away.  I was so put out that those batteries making that clock work had out lived her.

These experiences that we face, losing those we love are so hard.  I am so grateful for the gospel! I don't know how I would survive without the knowledge that I will one day be with my daddy again or with my grandma or my grandpas.  I'm grateful that all we need to do is ask, with real intent to know if this is true, and our prayers will be answered!  We are so blessed!

This talk gives me comfort!

Have you read this?

So, I just finished reading this book!  A few weeks ago, one of the priesthood leaders for the MidSingles suggested reading this book.  I saw it at Deseret Book for $6.99, so I picked it up.  It was so great!  He shares a million little ways to help share the gospel.  I tried one of the examples the other day at work, and felt so great about it.  This book makes it seem so easy.  You should read it!
Do you ever find yourself relating to a particular movie or song?  Well, I've had a couple recent experiences that have reminded me of certain movies; not to say that the circumstances are the same, but they relate...

So on Saturday night, we were at the ReAL game.  We have a group of people around us, that have been season ticket holders with us for a long time, so we have fun being with our friends there.  Well, right behind us are not season ticket holders, so we have new people every game there.  The rows are way close together, so we hear a lot of what the people behind us say; likewise, the seats directly in front of us aren't season ticket holders either, so we have new people there all the time, too.  A couple games ago, this guy was telling his mom they should buy the tickets right in front of us, because he got a kick out of us.  It was hilarious!

Anyways, overhearing this girl behind us made me think of "Failure to Launch" with Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew McConaughey.  Remember one of the steps she uses is to have him teach her something.  That's an idea I've pondered often.  I personally love it when someone teaches me something he's passionate about!  One guy I dated, although he wasn't thrilled about this, taught me a ton about website design.  I've been extremely thankful for that knowledge lately!  Then there was a guy I was "hanging" with a few months ago, and he taught me how to build things.  We built a bench and a kiddie picnic table for my nephews and niece.  It's so cool!  I've never done anything like that before!
  20130610_213034.jpg
(Hope he doesn't mind having his picture here, but it's just so cool! :))

Anyways, back to the girl at the game.  Over hearing her questions about the game, my first thoughts were, Could she really be that dumb? and She has got to be faking this!  The guy was thrilled to be teaching her about the game, although, it was apparent he didn't know much either.  I was amazed that her, ummm... ditzy-ness was okay with him.  Like her whining because it was 25 minutes into the game... and it should've been a quarter by then... and that's not fair to the players... they need a break.  Oh, my word, really! So bizarre to me!

Another movie that has been coming to mind lately is "The Holiday" with Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz.  I like this show.  There are dumb parts to it, but I love the little old guy in it, and I can actually stand Jack Black in it!  So, I have this friend that's been back and forth with this girl, whether they're dating or not dating, etc.  Well, I've been the sounding board for him, and have had a lot of time together.  One night we were going to Chili's, and I said, "yep, I'm the back-up girl," before we headed out.  He kept saying I wasn't, but I knew I was, and that was fine with me.  He's my friend.  Anyways, somewhere in the midst of hearing ALL the time about this girl, for whatever reason, I started thinking about this movie.  In the movie, Arthur Abbott is talking to Iris about her relationship issues, and tells her she's supposed to be the leading lady, but she always acts like the supporting actress.  I've always related to this, because I'm ALWAYS the buddy that everyone has to talk to, and share every detail of their dating lives.  It's so weird the things that make you want to change, it could be something you feel you want to try or it could be one line in a movie that wasn't even that big of a movie.

Anyways, that's my ranting for the day!

I Know my Heavenly Father Loves Me...

In Primary every Sunday we have a jar that has the names of all of the primary kids and leaders names in it.  As a name is drawn, they come up to the microphone and say, "I know my Heavenly Father loves me, because_____." (and they fill in the blank.)  Then they put a little clear stone in a jar.

Sometimes their answers are funny things that they say to get a reaction, and every once in a while they're so thoughtful!  It's funny, but a lot of the junior primary (3-8 year olds) answers are the more deep, thoughtful answers.  One little guy, without even having to think about it, rushed up to the microphone and said he knew that Heavenly Father loved him, because Heavenly Father gave him a great mom!  They're just so cute!

My name was picked out a few months ago, and I said, "I know Heavenly Father loves me, because of the responsibilities He trusts me with."  That's only one of a million reasons I know Heavenly Father loves me!

Yesterday we had an amazing devotional given by TC Christensen, director of "Ephraim's Rescue" and "17 Miracles."  I haven't seen Ephraim's Rescue, yet, but I've seen clips, heard from one of the actors, the director, and have heard stories of Ephraim Hank's life.  I do want to see it immediately, though!  TC was an amazing presenter!  That's not what I want to talk about, though.  I want to talk about another way that I know Heavenly Father loves me...

As I was preparing for yesterday's multiple meetings, I found myself anxiously excited for the day to come.  Then on Saturday, I was so ornery! I just felt uptight, annoyed, and frustrated.  Where am I going with this?  Well, it was a process.  I had to take time to evaluate what was the cause, why I would be feeling this way, etc.  I needed to be able to feel the Spirit, so I'd be able to do my part, and function on Sunday.  So, I came home from shopping and instead of doing anything that I had planned, I went straight to my bedroom, prayed and read from the Book of Mormon.  I read Alma 26 and Alma 27. In Alma 26:27 it reads: "Now my brethren, we see that God is mindful of every people, whatsoever land they may be in; yea, he numbereth his people, and his bowels of mercy are over all the earth.  Now this is my joy, and my great thanksgiving; yea, and I will give thanks unto my God forever. Amen."  I know that God is mindful of every people, that means ME and it means YOU, too!  That's another way that I know Heavenly Father loves me!

As Sunday came and went, I felt overwhelmingly grateful for the people that are in my life, that are their when I need them, and that give so freely of their time!

As I sat down next to TC on the stand, he asked me who I was, and what my job was being there.  I was able to sit with him and joke around and feel completely comfortable.  For some reason at that moment I remembered that it wasn't that many years ago that I could barely stand to call people or have to talk to people.  Like the man in Hungary told me, I'd never be a good missionary, because I never talked.  Wow!  How things have changed!  I'm so grateful for the opportunities I have been given to grow and strengthen my testimony.  I'm grateful for my testimony!!!

July!

It's my birthday this week! About a month ago I celebrated my "new" birthday.  It's been three years since my gall bladder was removed and my life was saved due to a handsome, young doctor that remembered something that had been done fifty years prior that he'd once seen in a book.  I have NO doubt that his remembering that was an answer to many, many prayers!  Well, as I've mentioned before, I am so grateful for being saved, and sometimes wonder why I was saved, what I'm supposed to be doing.

For whatever reason the build up to this birthday has not been so fun.  I've been annoyed with not being at the place I always dreamed I'd be at, at this point.  However, at the same time, I'm extremely thankful for the opportunities that I've been given.

So, I have had no idea of what I wanted for my birthday.  Guess what I decided on... a bike!  It's been forever since I've ridden one!  I got one today.  It's small, and the guys at the store kept saying I needed a taller one.  I couldn't reach the ground on any taller ones.  So, I'm going to ride my little bike!

So, sometimes I'm amazed what people say to each other.  For example, people post whatever they have on their brains on Facebook, when they really wouldn't say that in real life.  Well, remember Mr. D from here, over time he's popped out with some amazing things, and I'm saying amazing, not in a good way.  Well, I've had the chance to hear from Mr. D., Jr.  Now, I'm not going to say he's anything like Mr. Darcy of Pride and Prejudice, still a great guy though, but he is an awful lot like the Mr. D that I know.  These men are so concerned about where they are, that they're not getting married, that they're not meeting any women that are exactly 3 1/2 years younger than them (okay, so I'm exaggerating on the 3 1/2, but it's close), etc.  If they'd just let things happen, and not be so stressed about it, it would work out. Another thing, while relaxing and not getting so stressed about the above mentioned things, people really need to let go of what they have pictured for themselves, because the Lord may have something [or someone] way better than they're expecting prepared for them and their circumstances, whatever they may be.  Everyone has a past and everyone has issues, you need to let that other person in the "maybe relationship" have a say, whether they're able to deal with those issues or not, not just decide on your own.  It's a right that he's taken away from her or vice versa.  Another thing is that these Mr. D characters just talk and talk, not even aware that they're telling you all of these things that, although you were prepared to hear, may be affecting you personally!  Sort of like you don't matter, and I guess you don't.  So weird!

I've decided that besides all of the obvious reasons why being married, as man and wife, is important and should be happening, is the communication that being on your own lacks.  Men and women think so differently, and that is such a blessing in so many ways!  As a couple, you can discuss anything and everything, and you can let each other know when you're stepping out of reality.

For example, I'm a prime example of this!  I go on a date, it's super fun, then I don't hear anything from him for a week or so.  At first, I'm totally fine with that.  By that week mark/ week and a half mark, I have totally convinced myself that I've ruined everything, and I'm second guessing every little thing I remember saying or that I did something wrong or said something that could've possibly been read wrong, etc.  So, I'm a mess by this point!  Then I finally have to talk it out with someone, obviously not the person I should actually be talking it all out with, because apparently he hates me at this point :)  See... Craziness!!!  However, talking it out, I realize that yes, I've gone a little overboard, and need to relax.  See, they're concerned and scared, and so are we.  I think this dating stuff stinks at this stage of the game.  It's hard!  I so wish people would not read too much into things, and over think things, and just have faith.  I don't know why it's so hard, but it is definitely hard!

I think the same thing applies in many other situations, how you feel about work, how you feel about church, how you feel about your family.  If you have these inner discussions with yourself for too long without feedback from someone that's distanced from the situation, you're going to get stuck in a rut you don't want to be in.  If you're not happy with an aspect in your life, pray about it.  Pray long, and hard, and be hopeful, and keep moving!

Wow!  That was quite the tangent!  I've just been around so many different situations lately. Some have been things involving me, some are things that I get to hear about, since people like to share these kinds of stories with me!  My heart just hurts at times for these great people that are struggling!

Anyways!  I have six hours of work, 3 hours of piano, and then I'm off for the rest of the week!  I'm thrilled!  Hope everyone has a great 4th!  I'm proud to be an American, even though my heart is breaking for some of the changes and struggles that our country is facing!  I'm grateful for the freedoms that we have, and those men and women that fight and have fought for that freedom!

After the Savior was resurrected and returned to heaven, his disciples didn't know what to do to move forward, so they went back to fishing.  It was what they knew, what they were comfortable with.  I've been pondering this lately, a lot.  There's a great talk by Elder Jeffrey R. Holland check it out here! I like how he said that they were probably thinking, "What do we do now?"

In my occasional moments of stressing about where I'm at, what I'm doing, where I'm going... You know those questions we all wonder about from time to time, I find my self thinking, "I don't want to do this anymore! It was easier when..." or having the desire to have contact with a person that isn't a part of things anymore.  You know, I want to go back to what I know, what I felt comfortable with.  It's interesting to think how far one can come to have a moment of weakness take them back to where they were.

I'm grateful that we have the memory of things in the past, and that we can really see that we're better off than we were, but that it gives us hope of better things ahead of us!  Here's to moving forward and not dwelling on the past!

Lessons...

Today has been a pretty crappy day!  I was sick all weekend, and didn't get to do anything (well, besides go to the ReAL game!), and I've been feeling sorry for myself!  Maybe I've been a bit overwhelmed, tired, and wanting things to happen that aren't, so I've been moody.

Today we had a MidSingles FHE.  We played Minute to Win It with the kids that are staying at the Christmas Box House.  This has been an annual activity, and I always helped with it, I'd never had to be the one in charge.  While being sick, I didn't take the time I should have to be prepared.  So, it was here, and I was a panicky mess!  I nearly bawled at the checkout stand at Walmart after having my package of water bottles rip, and having the bottles go all over the floor.  The lady after making me tear up, said, "hey, look at the bright side, you won't have to work at opening your package."  I smiled, and there was lesson number one, there is always a bright side!

Then I got to the park, realizing that I had half of what I needed for two of the games.  The first one, I had picked up a ton of empty pop cans at a neighbors, and then I left them in the garage.  Dumb!  After I unloaded the car, I had to go buy nylons for one of the games.  There were about 4 people there when I left.  I was so worried we wouldn't have enough people.  I loved coming back, and having lots of people there.  We were ready, and I'd explained all of the games to the MidSingles, and we just had to wait for the Christmas Box kids to be there.  Some people were getting flustered and impatient, we lost some of them.  Lesson number two of the day, I could only be prepared for what my responsibilities were, and if we lost people, that was not my fault.  There was nothing I could do about things that were not in my control!  It was their choice...

The kids got there, and there were ten of them.  Each time we've had activities with them, there's always a different dynamic amongst the kids.  This time there was a younger group.  There were two boys that were older, and looked like they were going to be too tough to play with us, but they ended up having a really good time!  We played six different games.  One of the little girls came up to me and said it was the best party she'd ever been to!  So cute!  Lesson number three...  Find joy in the small stuff!  Each time one of the games ended, she'd be begging to know what the next plan was.  There was a little guy with the same name as my brother, and when I told him that, he decided he was my little buddy.  It was fun to see how creative they were in making the games work for them.  By the end of the evening, both of the tough boys came over and thanked me and shook my hand.  They were such cute little gentlemen!

Lesson number four is one that I have to learn repeatedly...  If there is some activity, event, plan that is meant to happen, it will happen.  The Lord will provide a way to get things working, even when you can't see how.

People are funny!

Once upon a time, maybe like 4 or 5 years ago, I had tickets to the Tim McGraw concert.  I had planned on having my aunt come with me, but she said her husband didn't want her to drive north for a while, so then I asked a friend of mine.  She was driving up from Las Vegas, but she ended up having to buy a couple tires, and wasn't able to make it.  Then something went wrong with option number 3.  So, about 2 days before the concert I asked this guy to go with me.  He said it sounded really fun, he had to check on a couple things, and then would let me know, but he was pretty sure that it would work.  Well, he called me later that night to tell me he couldn't, because of various reasons, much of which, in my opinion, was his over thinking.  The reason I share this awkward situation from the past is what happened after he said no.  He talked to me for about 25 minutes telling me why he was so sad he wasn't going to be able to go, i.e. he'd never been to Usana, he'd like to get to know me better, he hadn't been to a concert in years, etc.  It would've been fine to say no, and then end the conversation there, instead of trying to sale me on reasons why he'd love to have come.  (As a side note, I have tickets to Tim McGraw this year, and am yet to decide who I want to have go with me!)

Fast forward to today, and the same sort of thing happened; however, not a date, the above mentioned experience is one of the many reasons I don't ask guys out!   Anyways, I had contacted this speaker/musician to do a devotional for us.  I gave her a few dates, because I find that generally one of my dates will work out for them, even if I have a specific thing I want them to present at.  Well, on Saturday, I got an email from this person's scheduler, saying how she knows how important this program is, and how one of her friends has benefited from this, and would do what she could to make sure that we'd find a date to work.  It wasn't a straight out yes, but it sounded promising.  Well, today I got an email from her, and she said that this woman would not be able to present on any of my dates, because of how booked her schedule is.  There were dates from now through the beginning of 2014.  Anyways, that would've been enough.  I totally understand how busy these talented people are in high demand, and are probably asked by thousands of people to present for them.  I'm, also, really grateful that she responded, because she could've totally ignored me.  Lots of them do!  She then went on to explain what the current presentation is about, and how it's a message that we all need, but especially these lovely midsinlges I get to serve and serve with.  Now I'm even more sad it won't work!

"Do You Talk as a Rule While Dancing?"

Anyone know what movie that line is from?!  It happens to be the show that I watch when I'm sick.  I don't know why, maybe it's the relaxing colors, the beautiful music, the handsome Mr. Darcy (as in from the movie, not from past posts :))

I was at a dance on Saturday night, and this line kept popping up in my head.  I've never been a fan of dances.  While watching people dancing, I thought to myself that I wish I knew how to dance like that, (you know the real dancing, not the jogging in certain shapes and thinking you're dancing), but then I thought, do I really?  Not so much!  I mean it would be fun, to be able to do something awesome while at a dance, but there are just some things that are way uncomfortable to me.

I remember going to dances during jr. high and high school, not like the date dances, because obviously that wouldn't have the awkwardness, because you came together, but the other dances or stake dances, and just finding them really awkward.  Did you have to talk the whole time or could you just dance?  No one seemed to know what to do. Well, that's sort of the same thing now!

On Saturday, I was dancing with one of my friends, and we both mentioned how we felt awkward in this sort of setting, and I said, "Hey, at least we can be awkward together."  We continued to talk and dance, and it was quite enjoyable!

Then there was someone that asked me to dance, we have an uncomfortable past, and he kept talking.  I was right back there in jr. high, when I'd be dancing with someone I was uncomfortable with, and the whole song I kept thinking to myself... "let's not talk, let's not talk, when's this song going to be over?"

So, I'd say yes to talking, just as long as you're smart about who you're dancing with :)

Favorite things...

Today I was wrestling with my nephews and niece.  Ford was on the bottom of a pile up, with his brother and sister on him, and said, "I'm not going to live to see my 8th birthday!"  So funny!

Ad's was telling me about this dream she had of her and one of her brother's coming over to our house, and having a picnic in our backyard.  They got to be outside all by themselves.  "...Then I came and asked you for a dwink...  Do you remember that?"  She was dead serious!  She thought I would remember her dream!

I love being an aunt!
At my religion class on Wednesday night, my stake president (the guy who oversees six congregations in our area) was our special guest instructor.  He taught from the talk "It's a Miracle" by Elder Neil L. Andersen of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.  He talked about the miracles we see in our lives all the time!  Whether they're health issues, like blood clots, or my doctor knowing how to save me with a procedure that hadn't been done in half a century, or smaller things, miracles happen around us all of the time.

In the talk, Elder Andersen is talking about missionary work.  Since the age change for missionaries, it has been amazing to see all of the kids that are going on missions.  I'm so proud of those girls that have decided to do it.

When Collin was on his mission, we went to pick him up in Hungary.  As we were traveling around the country meeting the people he met, one guy told me I would be a bad missionary, because I never talked.  Athough he may have been somewhat right, because I was extremely shy and didn't speak much, but he was Hungarian, I was American  There is a huge difference between English and Magyar, there was no way I was going to be able to communicate well.  When I did speak, I would say an extremely common word in English, "sorry," which I was told was a REALLY bad word in Hungarian.  Anyways, back to the subject at hand.  I so hope that one day I'll be able to serve a mission with my spouse!

In class, we were asked when did we last have a missionary experience?  What are reasons we don't share the gospel?  I hope that the way I live serves as an example of what we have in the gospel.  Do I go out and ask people if they want to know more?  No.  Do I invite people to come to church with me?  Well, not really to my block meeting, but I do to the midsingle activities.  Why don't I? I'm so grateful to be a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  I know that Christ lives.  I know that he died, and atoned for our sins and sorrows and joys.  I don't go out and share things, because I fear telling my dearest feelings, and that those things that are so sacred to me will be mocked.  So, I'm going to work on being a better missionary!  We'll see how that goes!

So, the whole point of this post was to share a bit of an experience I had the other day.  I was at my friends wedding open house, and was sitting at the table with her boss.  We were sitting there eating, and talking, and there were tons of people around us.  You'd hear one person say, "Hello, Bishop (insert name)" or "This is Sister (insert different name:))"  Nothing seemed out of the ordinary to me.  Then the boss lady, looks at me with huge eyes, and her jaw dropped, and says, "Oh my gosh!  I'm probably the only one here, I'm the only outsider that's not one of YOU people!"  I knew exactly what she was talking about, but just laughed it off, and said, "Why?  Because none of these guys are your bishop?"  She laughed, and said, "I go to church every Sunday, I just don't go to THE church."  This has been a topic of conversation with her before.  We then had a funny, but good discussion about reading the Bible and following the commandments you find in there.  It was interesting and fun!

Check this out if you have any questions about the church I belong to!

Much needed weekend!

This has been one of the best weekends in a long time!  I've been so busy with so much, that I've been getting too caught up in just doing and not enjoying.  Today I was visit teaching, and the lady I was visiting mentioned a BYU podcast she'd listened to the other day that was something about living in survival mode is not living.  I think that's where I've been sitting at for a while.

Friday I went to some friends' wedding, and then, instead of rushing back to whatever I had to do, I went out to dinner with some friends and just enjoyed the evening.  I so needed that!

Then, yesterday, I went to the boy's soccer games and just got to play with them.  I love thoselittle guys so much!  Then last night I went to the Real game with my mom, our Real friends, and a friend of mine.  It was so much fun!  It was freezing, but so much fun!

Much needed great weekend!  Maybe I'll be ready for the crazy week ahead, now!  Thanks to all that made it great!
I don't often write political posts.  I certainly have my views, but I don't think I need to put it out there for the world to see, and I don't really want the to deal with the feedback.  Once I posted on facebook the stats of how many lies Obama said in one of his speeches a long time ago, and this girl pretty much, in all of her posts, told me what an idiot I was, numerous times, because my views were opposite of hers.  It was quite unpleasant!  I pretty much stay away from posting on other's posts, as well.  Not that seeing things that are morally wrong doesn't make me sick, it's not my job to judge them, so I don't comment.

There are two things that have been in the media lately that have been bothering me, though.  Today on Meet the Press, they were having a round table discussion about the bombers in Boston.  Tom Brokaw said that it's so sad that that bomber after living here for as long as he did, still felt left out and alienated, so the only answer was to bomb Boston.  What is wrong with this picture?!  The guy was insane, and bombed a city and killed and injured people.  It's not the fault of the people living around him, it is his fault, he made that decision!  That is what is wrong with the society we live in.  People don't take ownership or responsibility for their actions, and the media gives them any excuse.  So ridiculous!

The other thing is the Boy Scouts situation.  KSL posted on Facebook that the BSA was going to be voting on the whole gay thing.  One girl's comment said something like, "So, are we going to have to start walking around with badges saying we're heterosexual?"  Gotta say that is the dumbest post!  Heterosexuals don't drive around with rainbow stickers all on their cars and such.  So, really people are already wearing badges.  Anyways, those are my thoughts on two issues going on in the world!

stuff...

You know that I like to share some of the excitement going on in the LDS Mid-Singles world.  I've been lucky enough to be included in some monumental moments in people's lives.  I'm so grateful for the chances I've had to get to know so many people and serve with them, and get to know them so well.  I will forever be thankful for the opportunities that being the chair person for this mid-singles program has given me.  Congrats to everyone that's getting married or has gotten married in the past month and those graduating!  You're all amazing!

Life is always full of entertainment, stress, and fun!  I've been working this part-time job, that is SO FREAKIN' EARLY in the morning that I about die of tiredness mid-afternoon, and if I don't get a short nap, I get a second wind and a third wind to keep going as late as I need to go, but things seem harder or more stressful or more funny then they really are.  I'm in a nearly constant state of being on an emotional roller coaster, where I'm laughing because I'm so tired or I'm crying because I'm so tired.  Part of this tiredness, is that people are always asking me if I'm okay.  It drives me nuts!  Do I look that bad?  I will be feeling like I look presentable, and then 3 or 4 people will mention how tired I look or tell me not to worry, I'll be able to relax in such and such time.  It does wonders for your self esteem ;)

The other night we had an activity, and this guy had my put eye drops in his eye, because he'd never done it before.  Oh my gosh, I was laughing so hard!  As he flinched as the drops landed in his eye, I jumped, because it startled me.  So weird!

Remember when I was the wingman in a proposal?  They got married today!  That's another story, though.  So, I thought I was done being a wingman, but as I was chatting with this guy, thinking how fun this conversation was, he says, "We should be each other's wingman."  As I mentioned, I'm tired all of the time, and I heard him, but it took a couple seconds for me to realize what he said.  So, my question is:  What exactly does a girl do as a wingman?  He said he'd watch out for me, and protect me from the creepers, when he's around.  He said I could warn him about any crazy girls.  I guess it's a good program, but it caught me off guard, and I don't want to be a wingman.  There have been a few times since that I thought it would be great to have him there to block me from creepers staring at me.  Maybe since he wants to be my wingman, he could set me up with his friends or something.  Interesting thought!

Well, those are the rantings of this tired girl!

Easter... a little late!

I was meaning to blog on Easter, or right before Easter, but just have not a second to do anything besides bare necessities!

I am so grateful for the Jesus Christ's resurrection!   Easter is such a special holiday.  In primary during the month of March we'd been learning about the resurrection.  One of the lessons, I was asked to share why I'm grateful for the resurrection, because I've had someone close to me pass away.  Before it was my turn to talk, the kid's were asked how do you think the Christ's followers felt at the time that He was crucified.  It had been prophesied, and I'm sure the diciples were knowledgable about that, but to imagine that He was going to be alive, again, was most likely beyond comprehension.  In Junior Primary (children ages 3-7), one little girl said "they probably felt stressed" others said they were sad or they were mad, someone said they were scared.

So, when it came time for me to speak in Senior Primary (children ages 8-11), I'd had time to mull over the answers from Junior.  Senior didn't really respond, other than to say sad or mad. I thought it was so neat to see that the little ones were so in tune.  Anyways, I thought about how they said they were scared.  It was a neat experience for me.  I have to say that I'm so grateful for Christ's resurrection, because He was resurrected, we all can be.  When my daddy died, I didn't need to be scared about what would happen, if I'd ever see him again, because Christ was resurrected, Dad would be resurrected, too.  My heart was so full thinking about that.  I remember being sad.  I was 7 and I was sad, and I missed him so much!  I miss him so much!  I don't remember ever being scared about that, though.

So, I am grateful for Christ's resurrection, so I can be with my dad again, and all of my family!  I get so excited to think of how wonderful that reunion will be, and to think that no one will be sick.  They'll be in their perfected state, and that will be so wonderful for them!

I'm grateful for the Atonement!  I'm grateful that He not only atoned for my sins and my mistakes, but that the Atonement covers everything.  My sadness, my loneliness, my happiness, my joy.  He's felt it all!

For Easter, we had brunch with Collin and his family.  We had an Easter Egg Hunt and flew kites that my mom gave the kids in their baskets.  It was so much fun!  Then, I had a nap!  Boring, but oh, so needed!

Here are some photos of the day, and the day after:

Kids Say the Funniest Things!

The other night we had Family Home Evening at my brother's house, and then Collin and Krystal went Easter shopping.  We were told that they needed to be in bed no later than 8:30.  Gotta say that is hard!  They are so funny, and come up with the funniest things to stop that from happening.  They were in their beds by 8:40, yay us!  Being asleep, totally different story...

So, the baby was asleep, Addy was laying on her mom's and dad's bed watching a cartoon, and the boys were in their room, but not even acting like they were tired.  Ford has a loft bed, and Ev's bed fits under there, but it was pulled out for him to sleep in.  I went and layed underneath Ford's bed, and said I'd only lay there as long as they were being quiet and trying to fall asleep.  So, that was the deal.  Next thing you know, Ford says in his sweetest voice, "Pyper, why did the chicken cross the road?"  "I don't know Ford, why?"  "Well, normally, people say to get across the road, but really it was so he could fly..."  I didn't get it, but he certainly thought it was hilarious!  So, then I told them that the first one asleep gets a dollar, but if I was first asleep, I'd get a dollar from both of them.  So, they were trying to fall asleep.  It got really quiet, and I thought they were close, and then Everett says with a really sleepy voice, "So, when you say a dollar are you talking about bills or quarters?"  I said it didn't really matter, and Ford said, "I'm thinking a bill, because that's way easier to hand to mom and say 'the next time you're at the dollar store this is what I want.'" Ev says, "Ya, no, I'm thinking quarters would be best.  They're easier to use on other things."  So, I said we could work that out, if Ford was asleep first he'd get one dollar bill, if Ev was asleep first he'd get 4 quarters.  They seemed content with that, and then Ev says, "No, I'm thinking Ford gets one dollar bill, and I get 5 quarters..."  He's a smart one!

Earlier, I'd been brushing Addy's hair after her bath, and she says, "Um, Pyper, why am I looking at the wall?"  (I was sitting next to the bed, facing the wall.)  I told her I didn't know why she was, and she said, "It's because you put me here."  Like, how dumb, Pyper!

Then, while she was laying in bed, I was sitting by her, and said, "What are you doing?" while her finger was up her nose.  "I'm not picking boogies, Pyper, I'm feeling my snot, and it's not gross!  It's just wet."

Where do they come up with these things?!

Interesting thoughts, questions and the game of life...

So, I've been working part-time for a week and a half.  Gotta say I've made some discoveries about myself.  I've thought I'm a pretty feminine girl, but I do a lot of stuff, and I would never say I was prissy or anything.  Yep, I have my moments of not wanting to get all filthy and stuff, but I work through it and I'm fine.  Well, for this part-time job, it's dirty, casual, and different then I expected.  I've discovered that the second I get to my house from work, I'm taking off my clothes and running up the stairs to hop in the shower, because I can't wait for the second that I get to feel like a girl again.  Weird, maybe... but I gotta say there is nothing better than having my hair done, make up on, and heading out the door in high heels!  It's my favorite time of day!  I am such a girl!

I've mentioned how I get random weird questions often, well last night, I had another one of those thrilling moments.  Someone who is recently new to the mid-singles scene was talking to me about concerns she had with being there, and what's out there.  Nothing new.  Then she asked me if I was divorced or what, and I said I haven't been married, then she looked at me, and asked, "What's wrong with you?!"  Wow!  That wasn't a question I've heard much, and it caught me off guard.  What am I supposed to say to that?  I really don't know why I'm not married, other than that I know that I'm where I'm supposed to be, leading these mid-singles, and when the time comes, and it will come, I'll be ever so grateful for it, but I'll also be so grateful for the chance I've had to work with these amazing, interesting, and different sorts of people.  I've certainly grown being able to do this!

In our stake, for ward conferences, we have a youth activity with each ward the tuesday or wednesday before their ward conference.  The stake presidency runs the activity, and the stake young men and stake young women presidencies get to participate.  It's a great way for the youth to get to know the stake leadership.  This was my 3rd or 4th round of ward conferences, and my last one for at least a while as being a stake leader.  This year they played "the game of life" that our stake president, I think, created.  It takes you through the years of 18-33 when you make huge life decisions, but in the game each decision is based on a roll of the dice.  For example, if you roll 1-3 you serve a mission, if you roll 4-6 you don't, etc.  This happens for all life decisions... mission, college, tithing, marriage- temple or not, children, even salary.  Some people roll these high numbers and in the end their income is really high.   However, there is this other column on the spreadsheet that is for blessings, and it shows you how many blessings you receive.  There are a couple times in the game where you get to pick an "opportunity" card.  On these cards, it says something like, "pet runs away. -$100 +0 blessings" or "house fire. -$50,000 +15 blessings," etc.  The kids get a kick out of it!  As their income grows, they get to move higher up in the line to the soft seats, so there's constant motion.  It's a little chaotic if you have rambunctious!  So, when the opportunity comes to roll for marriage, every one usually gets married in the first couple of years.  Every once in a while, there's one person who doesn't get the chance to get married for a long time.  They roll and roll and roll, and it doesn't happen for a long time.  A couple of times it was a young women leader that wasn't getting married.   So, as they weren't getting married, they were whiny and complaining, and talking about what a loser they were and that there for sure won't be anyone left for them to marry, and they'll have to settle for some loser...  Okay, this was all a game, and they are married in real life.  Granted they were thinking they were hilarious.  Let's take out that I'm single, and just think about how the way that behavior affected their young women.  Not all of them are going to be getting married right after highschool or right after their missions or college or maybe ever.  They will remember all of those comments as they deal with that part of their lives.  Just one of my pet peeves!  Like when someone says, "I made all of the right choices and did my personal progress, and got my medalion, and that's why I was able to get married." Really?!  I think that all of those things are great!  The personal progress program is amazing!  It strengthens you and trains you!  However, having done those things, I can say that they're not the "reason" someone gets married.  I hope that as I've been able to serve in young womens for a few years that those young women have seen me, and see that it's okay to go at whatever pace the Lord has intended for you, and that you can be okay if you don't get married right away.

Change is inevitable, right?

When I quit my job at San Francisco Design in 2008 I had multiple reasons.  There was the fact that there was nowhere to grow.  The fact that the owner was a beast, and I could say was discriminating, because of my religion.  Or the staff that would drink and do tarot cards all day long.  Let's just say it was not a fun place to be.  You know, people can do what they want, but drinking and all the other stuff on the clock was so unprofessional!  However, due to that uncomfortable situation, I read and studied the scriptures more than I ever had before, and my testimony grew in leaps and bounds.  So, for that, I could say I was thankful!

As the time for me to quit was drawing nearer, I kept getting more uncomfortable being there, and knew that there was a big change coming.  I remember driving home from there, and stopping at the Bountiful Temple multiple times to just sit and ponder or do a session and pray to know what to do.  I applied for a job, and they really liked my work, but ended up saying that they couldn't afford me, and kept my house design I did for them.  Wonder if they ever built it?  It was awesome!  When I interviewed with them, I secretly was hoping that I'd get it, so I didn't HAVE to follow the impressions I was receiving, because that was too scary! How horrible is that?!  I think that's the first time I ever admitted that.  When it fell through, I decided I'd need to move forward on faith, and told SFD that when I was supposed to be going on vacation to DC, I was actually not coming back.  I think we were mutually thrilled with that prospect.

So, I started Designs by Pyper in October 2008.  I'm so grateful I did, even though there have been so many scary things, since.  It was perfect for being able to take care of Grandma.  There's no way that I would've ever been able to spend part of every day with her, had I worked in Salt Lake everyday.  I know that she was a major reason to do it, when I did it.  It was amazing!  I remember shortly after she passed away that I knew it was time for me to be more proactive in all facets of my life.   Then the economy tanked.  Work was so slow! And it hadn't been much before then.  Somehow I made it, though, and have been able to do so many things!

Anyways, I've been in the need of something else.  Not that I'm quitting anything, but more income would be great and very helpful, and I need to be out of my house more.  I absolutely love the freedom that I've had, and giving up some of it is difficult for me.  I've been trying to figure out what I could possibly do, and not work nights, weekends, and still be able to make piano work.  It's been this big stress for me, because I could easily find something that was 10-6 or something like that, but I've not been wanting to let my piano students down or their parents.  I had lost half of my studio last summer, which has never happened before.  While trying to figure things out, I told myself I'd give it until January 1st, and if I didn't get enough new students, I'd have to quit entirely.  I felt so horrible about doing it, but charging as little as I do for piano, it just wasn't cutting it.  The last week of December I got a number of calls for piano, and I'm now back to teaching every day.  It still isn't as much as I used to have, but I really can't go any later into the evening, so one day I applied at Home Depot.  What a weird thing!  I thought, hey it deals with homes, and I deal with homes, and I didn't want to go completely away from design, but didn't want to work anywhere where it would be a conflict of interest.  So, I applied, and really didn't think anything more of it.  Then they called and did a phone interview, and said I might hear from them again.  Well, I did, and the hours are 6:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m..  It works perfectly to still teach piano.  It's only a few days a week, so I have the other days to and afternoon/nights to do interior design.  I have to say that as I left the interview, I knew I was going to be offered the job, and I was sad and scared!  Weird, huh?!  I was nervous about how in the world I could do all that I do, and do this, too, and ever sleep.

The fact is that Designs by Pyper has been keeping me busier than ever before, and my sort of announcement on that blog, has brought me some great possibilities, too.  I get to decorate a wedding at the end of the month.

So, when I got the call that I got this part-time job, I got off the phone and bawled.  I used to hardly ever cry, and that's the reaction to so many emotions lately!  I was feeling completely overwhelmed.  I had a priesthood blessing, and I'm so grateful for that!

Today was my first day there, and pretty much all of it was watching web training videos, which was way difficult to stay awake for, seeing that I got up at 4:30, and yes I fell so deeply asleep during one part in between me clicking "next" (so it wasn't very long) I dreamt that Toby Keith was going to come present at my upcoming conference.  How crazy is that!?  I had to keep standing up and changing positions.

Anyways~  I've been able to get so much accomplished today, and it ended up being a fantastic day!  I'm so grateful to see prayers being answered!

When does one date turn into "dating"?

As any of you few readers, that read this know, I sometimes use this as an outlet to share weird situations I run into in this delightful singles world.  Well, I'm just going to get a little something out there, and then it'll all be good!

I got an email from a guy I went on 2 dates, count that 2 a long time ago, probably 14 months ago, or so.  I've posted previously about that experience.  Anyways, it was just a friendly "hello, what have you been up to" email, ---> I have to say that when my brother was on his mission, he had a certain girl that loved him and was waiting for him, and did a study abroad thing right near his mission, hoping to get a chance to see him... Anyways, she wrote to him all of the time.  He said that her letters wore him out.  Well, I get that way often!  If someone is just rambling or if they're constantly texting, oh my gosh, I have things to do... Okay, so that's not the case when I'm really into someone, but when I'm not... <--- font="">Okay back to the story.  The emails were coming, more like instant messages, but that's another thing... I don't mark myself online for the above mentioned reason. Then he says he has something he wants to show me, and proceeds to tell me, and tells me it reminded him of something I had said once.  I thought it was funny that he even remembered something so small, and told him so.  He said, "well, you were the only girl I dated that had ever said anything like that, so it stood out."

So, that's where my question of the night comes from.  When does a date or two turn into actually dating?  According to me, one, two, maybe three dates in is just "going on dates" not "dating."  It's still the process of figuring out if I want to actually "date" the person.  By the fourth date, yep, I'd say we're dating, but those initial dates not really.

I know some guys who think that just asking someone out means that they're stuck having to date the girl.  I don't know where that idea comes from.  Are they over thinking?  Have they run into lots of over-bearing, over-anxious women?  I don't know.  Probably, both.  I saw on a girls blog that we singles need to have faith, and faith without works is dead, so when the plan is to have an eternal family, but you don't go on dates, then how's that going to happen.

I saw on a guys blog something about being Mr. Nice Guy, and it doesn't work for the nice guys.  He said that the girl saying, "You're nice, but..." is not the best way to put it.  It's hurtful and mean, but he doesn't think that they intentionally are trying to be mean, but it is.  So interesting to see these different perspectives coming out.  I think the "you're nice, but..." in the guy world, is the same as me having to be every guys best buddy.  It's nice to have friends, but really there needs to be more.

Speaking of being someone's buddy, which in this case I'm totally fine with.  I love when I get texts asking about other girls.  You know, if I'm friends with the girl that's one thing.  When I hardly know the girl... Let's just say, I am NOT a wingman!  Seriously!  It was something to help with an engagement a month or so ago, but that was a one time deal, and I'm not in the business of setting you up or giving you insights into getting that special girl!

i LOVE being an aunt!

We had a family dinner last night, and while I got to spend individual time with each of my cute nephews and niece, I sat there listening to their funny stories and creative ideas or seeing the baby trying new things, and was just so thankful that I get to have each of them in my life!

The other day I was thinking about how I wanted to be able to have some one on one time with each of them.  It feels like it's been forever since I had that chance, and I was missing out on things.  The other day Ford was telling one of his other aunts that even though Mom and I come from the same location that we bring separate cars, because I ALWAYS have to go to church things.  Of course, being to all of my things is important and great, but I felt bad that he felt that way.  I was really glad yesterday that I didn't have to leave, and we could just chat.

While we chatted, we made a leprechaun trap. Well, he made it, and let me cut the gold coins out, and hold things while he taped it. Here's the finished product:

Photo: Awesome leprechaun trap my cute nephew made. He knows how to charm them with gold coins on top! What a creative smarty pants! Love him!

Then listening to Ev and seeing his ginormous eyes getting so big while he talked about the dragon blood he was looking at through the microscope was so fun!  He poked his finger with the dropper, and said that he was putting dragon blood in him, so he could be able to do everything that dragons do.  What a funny kid!(FYI~ dragon blood was just water.  What a great imagination!)

Ad's and her kitchen and barbies.  She's such a girl!  Then she can be playing with the boys, and be just as strong as they are!  So much fun!  She loves to cuddle!

Aks is crawling all over the place and loves to play ball.  He has a great arm!  Both arms!  He can throw better with his lefthand than I can... almost ;)

Drug tests, drama and drivebys...

I had my first ever drug test yesterday!  It was traumatic or maybe I'm being dramatic :)  One of my best friends, Amy, would always say that I'm going to die when I'm a mom, because I don't do bodily fluids.  She's right that I don't deal well with them, but I'm sure I'll be able to handle it when I'm a mom.  Once, Grandma was in the hospital and I was helping the nurse change her.  As the nurse swung the underwear thing underneather her, the side went in the toilet and splashed it right into my mouth!  Oh.my.gosh!  It was horrible!

So, back to the drug test... The whole procedure was strange.  Having to lock my stuff in the lockbox in the bathroom was weird.  Like I would be carrying around someone else's urine.  Sick!  Crazy people that would do that!  Anyways, that's done and over with.  Thank goodness!

Remember being in highschool and absolutely loving someone?  You had the biggest crush on this person, and you just wanted to be in their presence, even if that meant driving on their street.  Don't deny it!  I rode in enough cars with girls doing that very thing, and I can't tell you the number of times we drove right past MY someone's house.  So dumb!  What is the point?!  You know it still happens, though.

Well, nowadays you don't even need to get in your car to do a driveby.  You can just log on to your facebook account and do a "virtual" driveby.  Just checkin' things out!  Interesting thought!  I've mentioned before how annoying it is to be talking to someone, and say "well, I just did_________" and they're like, "yeah, I know.  I saw it on facebook..."  So, in the last few months I've slowed down my posts about my personal life.  I'll post quotes, links to great messages, links to songs that have touched me at the moment (and I'm sure if you're paying attention, and really know what's going on with me, those things seem to be sharing my personal life, but for those facebook friends and other friends and family that hardly know me or talk to me, what does it matter?)  Anyways, some things people post are freakin' hilarious and some are so inappropriate, some are fabulous and some are questionable.  Like for example, a guy I went to highschool with (or his wife) posted a picture of him, with a poster of details about his biological parents, and he found both of them and a plethora of family members in just a few days!  Amazing!  Then there's the girl that is now in college and thinks everyone needs to know the exact calories she eats, every meal, and how many hours she puts in at the gym, every three hours of the day.  Really?!  Get outside of yourself.  This last example is of something that should not be put out there for everyone to see.  A recently married woman I know, is now going through a divorce.  Apparently, he decided they're better just being friends.  How do I even know this?  It's right there for everyone to see, which 63 comments followed by whoever wanted to.  It's sad, but so not anyone else's business!

There you go!  Enough rantings for today :)

Hope it's a great day!

Articles and stuff...

Interesting read on dating right here.  The lady that wrote this article came and did a Monday night devotional for the midsingles about a year ago.  I think I wrote about it then.  There were some points that were really good, but there were things that were just plain obnoxious.  It was so fake! People were rehearsing on each other in the social afterwards, and it was hilarious to observe!  There were some fun things every once in a while that she gave of "he has interest in you if he does..." and vice versa.  It was funny to see some of those very things happening, even with one guy that had come in afterwards.  It was funny!

It's funny, because I'm not one of those that follow her, or her website, but every once in a while there's an article that speaks to me or affects me in some way.  Like this one, for example, was sent to me once by a guy.  He searched it out one night after we had had a less than wonderful conversation, and posted it on his facebook page.  I thought the timing was funny, but he couldn't have possibly posted it in any relationship to our conversation.  Well, a few minutes later he sent it to my inbox.  It fit him to the T, and I could see myself in the girl in the article.   It was interesting.  Oh, and here's  the article for the women that are in these kinds of relationships.

Now back to the original article up there.  The "I'm anxious..." feeling fits me to the T, at least in my last relationship. Since that relationship, I've been confused about what I was feeling, if I was reading my feelings correctly, not that it matters anymore, but I was second guessing a lot of it.  So, when I saw this title on facebook, I wanted to read it to see if any of my questions could be answered.  Let's say upfront, I was the initial ender to the past relationship, but it sort of drug on and on until it dwindled.  Anyways,  I really liked the scriptural references in this article!

All of these experiences, whether they're happy or hurtful, are all teaching me many things!  I'm grateful for the lessons.  I know that we have to feel pain and agony in order to understand and feel the greatness and glory!  Wouldn't life be so boring if everything was the same?!

An interesting question...

Today I was visiting my cousin in the St. George hospital, and as we were walking the hallways, she asked me if I want to get married.  I thought it was an interesting question, and probably one that people are curious about.

I remember back in the day, a relative of mine, every birthday I had would say, "I was married by the time I was such and such age...," then each additional year it was... "I was married and had 1 kid..." then on and on until it was 5 kids.  Then one day she asked me what she could do to help me.  She wasn't the only one who said these kind of things, lots of loved ones did, church members, people I hardly knew...  People were always saying things like that.  One lady told me I'd be "a good mommy in heaven... someday."   I have to admit that comments like that used to cripple me.  I struggled with it.  I saw that people saw my value as whether I was married or not married.  So, for a long time that's how I based how I valued myself.  I may have graduated from college, run a $1.5 million shoe dept., played the piano for someone amazing, been the musical director at a children's theater, become an interior designer, etc...  What did any of that matter? I wasn't a wife or a mom.

Well, life has moved forward.  I opened my own business, I've taught over 50 students how to play the piano, and as time has moved forward, I found me.  I may not be a wife or a mom, yet, but there's so much more than that.  Becoming a wife and a mom are still my ultimate goal, and what I want more than anything.

I'm a daughter of Heavenly Father.  I'm a daughter of Sandy and Colleen Nicholes.  I'm the sister of Collin, and sister-in-law of Krystal.  I am so lucky to get to be the aunt to three amazing nephews, and one amazing niece!  I'm a granddaughter, a niece, a cousin.  I'm an interior designer.  I'm a piano teacher.  I'm a musician.  I'm an artist.  I'm creative.  I'm a leader.  I love people.  I'm a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  I love children.  I love to serve.  I'm a business owner.  I'm a woman.  I'm a woman of faith.  I'm a learner.  I'm a reader.  I'm a teacher.

So, the answer to her question is yes I want to get married.  Apparently, it's not in my control and it's not in my timing, but when it's right it will happen.
